Meet Your API Access Management Expert, Dean Comben

G'Day, my name is Dean Comben and I’m a Principal Technical Consultant for the Okta Asia Pacific region, based out of sunny Brisbane.

I’ve always been interested in IT security, but really found my passion in the identity and access management space, which I have been working in for over 7 years. API security has been a focus for me over the past few years. APIs are a fantastic enabler for digital transformation, but if not secured correctly can open up core business processes to malicious actors.

Recently I recorded a podcast called “Meet Your API Access Management Experts” with Clarence Cheah. In this podcast, Clarence and I talk about the adoption of cloud-driven architectures and how that has influenced modern app design; and how APIs and identity are key to enabling these modern approaches. At the end we look to the future and discuss trends in authentication.

The biggest shift that has been happening over the last few years is the decomposition of applications, which has resulted in the business logic being externalized into APIs that can be re-used across multiple channels. The other aspect is consumers and regulators demanding better access to the data large organizations hold  - an great example of this being the Open Banking API that puts bank customers in control of their data. This has been made possible adoption of standards like OAuth and OpenID Connect, due to their support for consent, and ability to support many different types of clients; whether that’s mobiles, web browsers, or IoT devices.
