Okta Environmental Sustainability Policy

Our Commitment

In recognition of the imperative of climate action and the important role businesses must play, climate was identified as one of Okta’s most relevant ESG issues during an ESG materiality assessment. Okta’s sustainability strategy is focused on increasing transparency and action on climate change to protect people and the planet while driving long-term value for Okta’s business and stakeholders. Okta is also committed to working collaboratively with our partners and supporting climate equity.

As a global business, we are committed to acting responsibly to minimize our impact on the environment of our operations through responsible use of natural resources, increasing energy efficiency in our real estate portfolio, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and minimizing waste to enable us to maintain and promote environmental integrity for future generations. As a leading independent identity partner, our approach to environmental stewardship focuses on key areas that are most relevant to our business, such as green building certifications for our direct lease offices and engaging our vendors as the majority of our emissions are from our value chain. As a software company, we do not manufacture physical products; we lease our office spaces and use third party cloud service providers.

Our Approach

Okta’s ESG and climate efforts, led by the company’s ESG and Sustainability team in partnership with the Okta’s ESG Committee and many cross functional partners, are overseen by our executive leadership and reviewed by the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee of our Board of Directors. This Environmental Policy documents Okta’s commitment to compliance with applicable sustainable legislation and related requirements.

We have established this Environmental Sustainability Policy to be consistent with our organization's values. It provides a framework for the setting and review of environmental and sustainability objectives. See our energy and climate page for additional information and documentation about our program.

Okta aims to minimize its impacts on the environment by:

  • Striving to continuously improve environmental performance and management.
  • Employing sustainable operations in our real estate portfolio. For example, all new offices on a direct leased basis will be both LEED Silver and WELL Silver certified or equivalent.
  • Achieving 100% renewable electricity to match electricity consumption of our global offices, remote workforce, and third-party cloud service providers.
  • Setting environmental performance targets. This includes our long-term commitment to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reduction across scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3. These targets are validated by the internationally recognized Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). We will report on our progress via our annual GHG inventory. We will communicate frequently with transparency about our environmental performance progress.
  • Using our Partner Code of Conduct to promote vendor compliance with ethical business conduct, operate with transparency and integrity, and uphold Okta’s values and expectations. These expectations include minimizing environmental impacts in our supply chain. Our Partner Code of Conduct also reinforces Okta’s commitment to human rights in all our operations and supply chain.
  • Raising environmental awareness amongst employees by promoting sustainable consumption through, for example: Okta’s (i) Dynamic Work Sustainability Guide, (ii) Sustainable Travel Guidebook, and (iii) Sustainable Events Checklist. We engage employees on how their roles and responsibilities can contribute towards environmental performance by practicing environmentally responsible behavior.
  • Measuring waste generated from our business operations at select sites and encouraging employees to incorporate practices in both office and home-working situations to reduce, reuse and recycle across food, energy, waste, and water usage.
  • Engaging with industry groups to contribute towards the movement of environmental sustainability in business. These groups include collaborating with, for example, the Business Council on Climate (BC3) and Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA).
  • Working with external experts to develop sustainability goals, policies, and reports to foster accuracy and transparency in our sustainability program.

The Environmental Sustainability Policy is approved by Okta’s ESG Committee; will be reviewed and updated as needed; and is accessible online for employees, stakeholders, customers, clients, and the public to view. Exceptions to the Policy must be approved by the ESG Committee.

It is the intention of Okta to encourage all suppliers and people working on behalf of the organization to support this Environmental Sustainability Policy.
