Delivering a delightful user experience with IdentityWith more than 10k companies relying on their HR and financial management platform, Workday’s teams have to operate both efficiently and securely in order to keep their customer data safe. To accomplish this, security needs to be intuitive, slightly invisible, and seamlessly integrated with how their users already interact with the applications. If it’s cumbersome, people will look for ways around it, and that puts data at risk. Providing a delightful user experience for both their customers and employees is Workday’s priority, and they recognize that securing that user journey isn’t just valuable, it’s table stakes. Workday needed an Identity solution that would grow and adapt to support these ever-advancing security needs for years to come. They also needed a solution that could accommodate their extensive use of AI, help them automate access management workflows, and offer insight into their Identity and security compliance objectives. On the customer side, Workday also needed to provide their customers modern Identity features such as Adaptive Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), Single Sign-On (SSO), and easily managed Lifecycle Management. |
Scaling Identity infrastructure to accelerate growthWorkday has trusted Okta with their Identity management for more than 11 years, as they saw it as an opportunity to partner with another organization that aligned closely with their desire to be an early adopter of cutting-edge technology. Workday uses Okta’s Workforce Identity Cloud (WIC) to centralize and connect Identities across the organization and gain clearer insight into company-wide identity management. They also use Okta’s Customer Identity Solution to extend Identity security solutions to its customers who want — or even require — specific security and compliance standards. Recently, Workday’s motivation to adopt the newest features quickly led them to migrate to Okta Identity Engine (OIE), giving them access to features such as Passwordless login options for their teams, contextual access, and expanded customization. The team is also utilizing Okta Identity Governance (OIG) to unify governance and Privileged Access Management (PAM) in a single solution to simplify compliance. |
Using governance to securely integrate AIMaking changes to a massive enterprise can take time, but by standardizing Identity security, Workday can deploy new solutions efficiently, knowing their data — and their customers’ data — are secure. With WIC, the company is automating the onboarding and offboarding processes for their employees and granting contextual access to applications when needed and saving more than 143k hours of administrative work over its lifetime. It also saves employees time if they forget passwords. Giving users the option to self-service a password reset using MFA, Workday has saved more than $250k in employee hours. Additionally, OIG Access Certifications eliminates manual user access reviews, saving administrators time and preventing overlicensing and over-permissioning, ensuring that only designated users have the right amount of access to applications. Combined with improved governance visibility, OIG helps Workday reach both security and compliance objectives and has saved the company nearly $1 million. For their customers, Workday uses Okta as an authoritative source of truth related to authentication and access and as a hub from which they can enforce security- and compliance-related features such as MFA. The company’s ongoing goal is to create truly frictionless, secure Identity experiences that empower their employees and strengthen Workday’s overall security posture. This involves deploying new, AI-powered analytics to proactively identify and mitigate threats, staying on top of potential Identity-related vulnerabilities, and enhancing security for everyone that interacts with Workday. |
