The Director of Engineering Opportunity
As the Director of Engineering the Experience & Authentication product offering , reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, you will be a critical leader in shaping and driving exceptional experiences for both internal and external developers interacting with Auth0. You will be instrumental in making our platform intuitive, powerful, and a joy to use for those building the next generation of secure applications.
You will lead and inspire three key engineering areas focused on:
- Auth0 Extensibility Platform: Driving the evolution of our Actions and Flows, ensuring they are intuitive, powerful, and enable developers and non coders to easily implement custom authentication workflows with their own logic. Your vision will define how developers extend and tailor Auth0 to their unique needs.
- API and Dashboard Services: Championing the consistency, reliability, scalability, and overall developer experience of our core APIs and dashboard interfaces. You will ensure these foundational elements are a pleasure to work with and empower our customers realize greater value with Auth0.
- Developer Growth & Adoption: Collaborating closely with Developer-Led Growth teams to build compelling subscription, activation, acquisition and content/doc experiences that empower developers to quickly adopt and integrate Auth0. Your understanding of the developer journey will be key to expanding our reach.
- You are a passionate and strategic engineering leader with a proven track record for building and scaling reliable distributed cloud services. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with product teams to translate vision into impactful developer-focused solutions. Your technical depth allows you to drive technical excellence and innovation within your teams, and your collaborative spirit ensures you can effectively navigate and influence cross-functional initiatives. Beyond direct management, you will be a champion for your teams' growth, fostering a culture of technical ownership, and building an environment where people thrive and engineering excellence is paramount.
What you’ll be doing
- Collaborate strategically with Senior Engineering Managers and the VP of Engineering to align engineering efforts with critical customer and product needs, ensuring scalability, security, and high performance are deeply embedded in our solutions.
- Lead roadmap definition for your areas of ownership in close partnership with Product and Design, actively engaging with engineers, cross-functional teams, customers, and partners to understand their needs and translate them into a compelling vision.
- Champion our mission by consistently connecting your team's work to the broader goal of making the internet safer and clearly articulating the business value of simplifying authentication for our customers.
- Spearhead the adoption of innovative technologies and agile methodologies to continuously improve team efficiency, engineering effectiveness, and the quality of our deliverables.
- Play a key leadership role in quarterly and yearly roadmap planning, collaborating closely with Program Management and other Engineering leaders to ensure alignment and strategic execution.
- Inspire and develop a diverse team of engineering managers and senior engineers, including those in distributed locations. You will be a key mentor and coach, identifying and nurturing talent to foster growth and skill development.
- Cultivate and champion a high-performing team culture characterized by growth mindset, openness, trust, rigor, humility, mutual support, and psychological safety.
- Drive talent acquisition by leading the recruitment process for exceptional engineers, working closely with our recruiters to build a world-class team
What you’ll bring to the role
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of progressive technical leadership experience, directly managing and developing engineering teams.
- 10+ years of broad software development experience, with significant expertise in building and scaling SaaS platforms, including both front-end and back-end systems.
- Proven success as a Director or Senior Engineering Manager in building and nurturing high-performing, inclusive, and collaborative global engineering teams that consistently deliver impactful results.
- Deep technical acumen gained through hands-on software engineering experience, with a strong understanding of full-stack development, distributed systems, and infrastructure at scale. You have experience in the design, building, deployment, and/or management of large-scale distributed systems.
- Demonstrated experience successfully leading and managing geographically distributed engineering teams.
- Exceptional coaching and mentoring skills, with a proven ability to guide teammates at all career stages and provide clear focus to enable teams to consistently achieve their objectives.
- Highly self-directed and autonomous, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
- Comfortable and effective in navigating ambiguous situations and driving clarity.
- Extensive experience with Agile methodologies, continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, and test automation in the development of software services and their supporting infrastructure, including robust monitoring, alerting, and operational tooling.
- Maintain high standards for engineering excellence and have a demonstrable track record of building and leading consistently high-performing teams.

- Experience working on Identity and Access Management software and concepts.

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies.
